Behavior and Fear-Free℠ Tactics

Behavior and Fear-Free℠ Tactics

What is the Fear Free℠ Initiative?

Fear Free℠ is a training and certification program that helps veterinarians.

Developed by “America’s Veterinarian,” Dr. Marty Becker, the Fear Free initiative aims to “take the ‘pet’ out of ‘petrified’” and get pets back for veterinary visits by promoting a considerate approach and gentle control techniques used in calming environments. Utilization of Fear Free℠ methods and protocols leads to reduction or removal of anxiety triggers, which creates an experience that is rewarding and safer for all involved including pets, their owners, and veterinary health care teams. What are the latest actions being implemented at Veterinary Care Center of Richmond?

You may see some changes over the next few months. Mats on the examination tables to allow our furry friends more grip and less fear on the table. The music in the rooms will be focused more toward songs that are comforting to pets. Yes, playing classical music is really relaxing to our pets! We may offer  your pet treats to calm them down. If you would like, you can bring your own treats to the hospital. All of the changes we will be making are to help your furry friend to be more comfortable on their visit to see us.

Behavior Consultation Services, what is that?

Problem behaviors can range from leash reactivity and separation anxiety, to human aggression and unruly behavior. Many behaviors are actually symptoms to an outside source, or possible traumatic history in your pet’s past.  These behaviors can sometimes be untrained and replaced with a positive behavior or reaction. This will take professional training, and a unique, individualized plan, which is why we are here to help!

Wow, I could really benefit from talking to someone about my pet, who should I ask for?

Dr. Andrea Golombek has a special interest in behavior and offers consultations for almost any behavior issue; from unruly puppies to adult dogs with anxiety.  She will see all species for behavior issues, not just dogs and cats. She offers an approach that is a combination of medications and behavior modification, using positive reinforcement techniques. You can find Dr. Golombek at our sister clinic, Berkley Animal Hospital, to schedule your appointment.
